Orange Tooling Gel Coat

High Gloss and Superior Hardness for Molds

Tooling Gel Coat is an abrasion resistant gel coat used for fabricating molds when gloss retention, superior hardness, exceptional craze resistance and minimum distortion are paramount. Our Orange tooling gel coat offers excellent contrast allowing you to gauge the gel coat coverage and differentiate between your finished part and the mold. The life of a good polyester mold may be extended considerably by the use of tooling gel coat. For best results, build the film thickness to 20 -25 mils. One gallon of gel coat will cover approximately 40-80 sq ft. #1040 Duratec Clear Hi-Gloss Additive can be added to further upgrade the gloss.

Formulated for 1.5% - 2.5% MEKP.

What Is #188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat?

#188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat is an abrasion-resistant gel coat used for fabricating molds, where gloss retention, superior hardness, exceptional craze resistance, and minimum distortion are the priorities. #188 is the surface coat applied to a tooling layup to give a polyester mold a hard, durable face, and using it can considerably extend the life of a good polyester mold.

Why Choose #188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat?

Two things make #188 a tooling gel coat rather than a part gel coat: its mechanical properties and its orange color. The mechanical properties of #188 include superior hardness, craze resistance, abrasion resistance, and low distortion.

The orange color offers excellent contrast, letting you gauge gel coat coverage as you spray and clearly differentiate the finished part from the mold during demolding. Gloss can be further upgraded by adding #1040 Duratec® Clear Hi-Gloss Additive.

What Are the Best Applications for #188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat?

#188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat is designed for use as the mold-surface gel coat when building polyester tooling that must hold gloss, resist crazing and abrasion, and stay dimensionally stable over many pulls. Its contrast color also makes it useful wherever clear coverage control and part-versus-mold differentiation matter during demolding.

How Should #188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat Be Used for Best Results?

#188 Orange Tooling Gel Coat is catalyzed at 1.5% to 2.5% MEKP and built to a film thickness of 20 to 25 mils for best results. One gallon covers approximately 40 to 80 square feet. Add #1040 Duratec® Clear Hi-Gloss Additive to further upgrade the gloss of the mold surface.
