Ultimate Barrier Coat for Corrosion and Marine Applications
Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer brings unmatched strength and performance in a highly functional resin system. It was originally designed as the premier barrier coat for boat hulls and repairs, but has been found to be useful in many composite applications including resurfacing molds, marine construction and repair, and corrosion protection for tank lining and piping. It's also frequently used when fabricating dimensionally stable general purpose and high temperature patterns.
What Is Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer?
Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer is a barrier coat built on a vinyl ester resin system. Originally designed as a premier barrier coat for boat hulls and repairs, Duratec® Grey has since proven useful across many composite applications, including resurfacing molds, marine construction and repair, corrosion protection for tank lining and piping, and fabricating dimensionally stable general purpose and high temperature patterns. Built on vinyl ester chemistry, Duratec® Grey carries the corrosion and chemical resistance that places vinyl ester between polyester and epoxy in the resin family.
Why Choose Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer?
A barrier coat protects the laminate or substrate beneath it from water and chemical intrusion. Duratec® Grey is water and chemical resistant and cures in open air with no wax or air inhibitor required.
Open-air cure is a meaningful advantage: thin coats of standard polyester resin can stay tacky when left exposed to air and require a styrene wax additive to fully cure, while Duratec® Grey cures cleanly on its own.
The primer offers strong temperature stability with a Heat Deflection Temperature of 285°F and cures with low porosity to leave a defect-free surface that can be polished to a medium gloss. Duratec® Grey is formulated for low VOCs and low Hazardous Air Pollutants.
What Are the Best Applications for Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer?
Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer is well suited to marine hull construction and repair, mold resurfacing, corrosion protection on tanks and piping, and building dimensionally stable patterns for both general purpose and high temperature work. Anywhere a project needs a tough, corrosion resistant surface layer with a polishable finish, Duratec® Grey fits.
How Should Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer Be Used for Best Results?
Duratec® Grey Vinyl Ester Primer comes pre-promoted, so you simply catalyze with 2% MEKP and spray, brush, or roll it on.
To reach a workable spray viscosity, thin 5% to 15% with #2306 Duratec® Reducer. The primer contains fillers that settle to the bottom of the container, so before use agitate it with a paint shaker or a drill-mounted mixer until all pigment is fully dispersed with no lumps remaining.
