High-Gloss Surface Layer with UV Protection
What Is Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat?
Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat is a specially formulated polyester topcoat that offers excellent gloss and UV stability. #1045 Sunshield is compatible with epoxy, vinyl ester, and polyester resins and can be applied to epoxy laminates as an in-mold or post-mold coating.
Duratec® Sunshield gives a durable, scratch-resistant surface with excellent anti-yellowing properties, making it a strong protective clear over epoxy or vinyl ester parts.
Why Choose Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat?
The anti-yellowing UV stability of Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat is its defining advantage: epoxy parts in particular benefit from a clear coat that resists yellowing in sunlight. Sunshield also builds fast for a smooth, pit-free surface, which reduces cycle time and labor.
Unlike a traditional gel coat, Duratec® Sunshield is applied as a misted, out-gassing build, which is what gives it its smooth, low-pit result.
What Are the Best Applications for Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat?
Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat is suited for use as a UV-protective clear topcoat over epoxy, vinyl ester, and polyester laminates, in-mold or post-mold, where gloss, scratch resistance, and anti-yellowing matter.
Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat is particularly well suited to epoxy and carbon fiber parts that will see regular sunlight exposure.
How Should Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat Be Used for Best Results?
Duratec® Sunshield Clear Topcoat should not be applied like traditional gel coat. Spray a light dust coat and let it set up for two minutes, then apply additional 4 to 5 mil coats, allowing at least two minutes to out-gas between each.
About 12 to 15 mils gives a good finish with UV protection; up to 22 mils can be applied where aggressive post sanding is needed. Post-mold, sand the surface with 180 grit for mechanical tooth. With epoxy laminates, water wash with a Scotch-Brite pad before and after sanding. Remove dust and acetone-wipe before applying. Sand the final spray with 400 grit, cure 8 hours, then wet sand from 400 to 1500 grit before polishing.

more light coats vers heavy coats in the long run is much easier to final sand
I used this to cover a repaired fiberglass boat with camo painted on it. My concern with shooting gel coat is always will it dry? I took the advice given to carefully stir each batch to make sure that the hardener was evenly distributed. I lost track of the amount of coats, but I used a half gallon on a 15' row boat. I am very happy with the results. No runs, no drips, no errors. And a shiny, hard coat. Thank you!
Great product , that I have used in the past. Shipping was fast. Would definitely buy from them again
