Molded Parts and Repairs in Just a Few Layers
6 oz Fiberglass Fabric Overview
The 6-ounce Plain Weave Fiberglass Fabric is popular for molded parts and repairs. For waterproofing applications, just two to three layers can be used.
Like other plain weaves, it delivers uniform strength in both horizontal and vertical directions, with warp and fill yarns at 0 and 90 degrees, respectively.
Features
- Popular fabric for lightweight moldings and repairs
- Uniform horizontal and vertical strength
- Cures transparent
- If requested, this fabric can be certified to meet the requirements of: AMS-3824 Style 3733; ASTM D 4029-09 Style 3733; and MIL-Y-1140
Tips
- Great for use for strip-built canoes--just a single layer provides robust protection
- Orient this fabric so that yarns run parallel to expected loads.
- During lay-up, add layers at alternating 45-degree angles to maximize strength.
- Use with epoxy resin, polyester resin, or vinyl ester resin to produce composite parts of excellent strength, low weight, and great cosmetics.

Why Choose 6 oz Fiberglass Fabric?
Medium-weight plain weaves, between six and ten ounces per square yard, are perhaps the most versatile fiberglass fabrics available. Typically called boat cloths, they are inexpensive, strong, and easily formed.
They retain enough flexibility to drape over most contours and they contribute significantly to the strength of the part. The 6 oz weight sits at the lighter end of this popular range, offering a balance of strength and conformability that makes it ideal for repairs and waterproofing where a heavy layup is not needed.
The 6 oz fabric provides more body and strength than the lightweight surfacing fabrics (2 oz #241 and 4 oz #262) while remaining thin enough for applications where minimal bulk is desirable. In general, any plain weave fabric can be used for laminating a protective layer over wood, and the 6 oz is a particularly popular choice for strip-built canoes, where just a single layer provides robust protection. Lightweight fabrics are good if the protective layer is to be transparent, such as on strip-built canoes.
What Are the Best Applications for 6 oz Fiberglass Fabric?
The 6 oz fabric is also well suited for repairs where a few layers can rebuild structural integrity without adding excessive thickness. For fiberglass repair applications, selecting the right weight of fabric helps match the repair to the original laminate thickness.
How Should 6 oz Fiberglass Fabric Be Used for Best Results?
To maximize strength properties of fiberglass, use with an epoxy resin. Use squeegees, brushes, and rollers to saturate the reinforcement with resin and work air from the laminate.
Available as cut-to-length yardage (#259, min 10 yd), 1-yard package (#259-F), 3-yard package (#259-A), and 5-yard package (#259-B).
