Easy Spray-On – Easy Release for Molds

PVA, or polyvinyl alcohol, should be used with our #1016 Partall Wax for the easy release of parts from a mold. Wax should be applied to the mold, 3–4 layers thick, and buffed to a high gloss. Once the final layer of wax has dried, PVA should be applied with the following considerations:

  • PVA can be brushed on, but for best results, apply with a spray gun, 12–18 inches away from substrate.
  • Generally, apply in three layers: the first, a thin mist, allowing 10-15 minutes to dry completely. Then apply two heavier flow coats, allowing each to dry completely (30-45 minutes each).
  • PVA should form a smooth, glossy surface that will not shrink or pull away from corners or curved surfaces.
  • It may be applied over polyester repairs, or gel coat, as a surface layer for airless tack-free cure.

As a dry film, PVA is resistant to the solvents in a resin system, but is water soluble. PLEASE NOTE: It should not be used with resin or substrate that contains—or produces—water during cure.

One gallon covers approximately 400 square feet.

PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) release film is a commonly used material in composite manufacturing processes. Here is some information about the use of PVA release film:

  1. Purpose: PVA release film is primarily used as a release agent and surface protection material in composite molding. It creates a barrier between the composite part and the mold surface, preventing the part from sticking to the mold during the curing process.
  2. Release Properties: PVA release film has excellent release properties, allowing for easy removal of the cured composite part from the mold without causing damage or leaving residue. It helps to achieve a smooth and high-quality surface finish on the composite part.
  3. Compatibility: PVA release film is compatible with various types of molding materials, including polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, and other thermosetting resins. It can be used with different mold surfaces, such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, and metal molds.
  4. Application: PVA release film is typically applied to the mold surface before the lay-up or infusion process. It is commonly used in conjunction with mold release wax to ensure a release from a composite mold. It can also be used as a barrier in open air gel coat applications.
  5. Water Solubility: PVA release film is water-soluble, which means it can be easily dissolved in water after the part has cured and released from the mold. This allows for easy cleanup and removal of the film from the mold surface.
  6. Surface Protection: In addition to its release properties, PVA release film provides a protective layer for the mold surface. It helps to prevent damage, scratches, or contamination during the lay-up and curing process.
  7. Shelf Life: PVA release film has a limited shelf life and can degrade over time when exposed to moisture or high temperatures. It is important to store the film in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding shelf life and storage conditions.
  8. Safety Considerations: When working with PVA release film, it is important to follow safety precautions and guidelines. This may include wearing protective gloves and eyewear, ensuring proper ventilation, and handling with care.

PVA release film is a popular choice in composite manufacturing due to its effective release properties and ease of use. It helps to simplify the demolding process and improve the overall quality of the finished composite parts.

PVA 13

Apr 22, 2023  |  By John Snook

Used as a topical curing agent for gel coat repairs on a bass boat, worked excellent and achieved full cure. Would also note that Fibreglast as a company has served me well even though I'm a small time boat repairman, always fast service/shipment of quality products, couldn't ask for better !!!

Release film

Reasonable price, Works excellently. As a first-time mold attempt maker, the release film worked as it should, and I was very pleased with it. I applied the release film with a brush, and it flowed and layed down on the surface excellently.

Excellent customer service!

The PVA 13 is always reliable and works well for us building with carbon, Kevlar, and epoxy. We designed and built our Spencer C-3 mold in 1988-1989. Our molds and your PVA 13 are still helping us build beautiful boats this many years later! We just built another 26' long Spencer C-3 in that mold last week!
Thanks for the quick response as usual on our order.
Super Fast Shipping

Very Happy... Easy and quick ordering and communication along with super fast shipping... nice packaging on PVA ordered.
I had ordered elsewhere, heard nothing from them, contacting them every 2 weeks for update, excuses, so after 30 days the PVA still back ordered, maybe another 2 weeks... I removed from that order so they could send my color matched Sea Ray gel coat for some spot repairs... FIBREGLAST will be my 1st stop next time!

Worked great!

This was my first time every copying a piece (hood scoop). I applied this with a brush, allowed to dry and put resin and cheese cloth directly over it and popped it free with compressed air. I wish I had starting doing this years ago!

Works Great!

I've never made a mold before, and there are a lot of opinions about the best way. Some say wax, other say wax and releasing agent. Spend the $$$ and buy a releasing agent. This purchase saved my project from certain destruction. Quick service from Fibre Glast was amazing!

PVA 13
Jun 20, 2015  |  By Daniel B
I recently ordered the PVA 13 product to build a new fiberglass mold. It is recommended that the product be sprayed but can be sponged on. I used an ultra smooth paint roller and I can't begin to tell you how nice it surfaced. Once more I was really concerned about how the mold would pull from the master due to all the curves and angles. It couldn't have pulled cleaner. Very happy with the product.

PVA release film

I have used other release films in the past and all were similar to this product. When spraying on the mold the others did not give a nice smooth texture there was always some orange peel to it. This PVA was much better. I sprayed it on the mold according to the directions and it flowed out to a perfectly smooth film. When it came time to release the part from the mold it was almost too easy. The part just pulled right out of the mold with hardly any effort. This is a great product and I will be using it on the rest of the molds and parts for my rc airplane. I am confident that all future parts will turn out perfect with the use of this product.
